Insoluble Rose

Through the night sky ,

I watched the cup of a rose

fill with the sky’s tears.

Spilled water seeps to earth

it seeps to eyes of bone.

Lost the wonder of your touch the pale

sun around your lips, the moon inside

your mouth.

So much wish to touch past the stars

and burst that skin that holds grey sky.

Pulling back the past the curtained night

to change it into day.

Then maybe I could see her face as flowers

subside in rain.

Then maybe i could see your face

as flowers subside in rain.

The beginning of an Epitaph. (Part 1)

Do you remember the big shamrock she used to wear ?

The oversized hat and the ribbons green white and gold, that

Shimmered like her, so bold.

We laughed when we saw it, and  curled up in a ball.

But she didn’t care, about our loving jeers

Delighted  to walk in the Tallaght parade.

We’d revel in her joy like rainbows breaking clouds.

Entertained for hours when she was well.

Eating monkey nuts , shells scattered over a cold floor

Newspapers strewn to the door.

It was chips all round, and she’d only ask for a bit of

Fish.

Round the rocky roads , black the clouds that

Sometimes covered her like a shroud, when her stormy mind

Was shadowed.

The worry gene that plagued a Gaelic heart.

Fairy Forest

Fairy Forest

Deep in the fairy forest as the moon began to seep

I watched wisps, of morning summer laughter.

Soft sounds of innocence as buttercups kissed,

And butterflies shimmered around a toadstool.

Centre stage for a fairy dance.

My blue eyes glistened, as my fair hair itched.

Her footsteps silent summer, golden silk

The ringlets of her hair, fluttered in the air.

Her tunic was copper green flowing to a

Toad-stool stalk, as she danced to the forests flittering cry.

Spinning dandelions, sent pearl snow

Shimmering silver as the spirit of a breeze whispered kisses.

Beneath her feet the ladybirds and ants circled.

She turned on a reel in a whirl like a winded leaf.

Her eyes softest green sparkled raindrops

Crying for the forests love.

I watched, wanting to spin round and round

In a whirligig, giggling and spinning my eyeballs spun.

Hard callous hands parted green, as footsteps

Interrupted an eloquence so sweet.

Something else stirred, as I caught another pair of eyes.

A wandering wolf, white with yellow snarling teeth,

It growled, as a Fairy Queen tried to tame the beast.

Folding inside my self a frightened flower

I watched the battle for the fairy dance.

The wolf screamed and clawed, as the fairy

Clung to this dancing beast.

Her magic whispers spoon a silver rhyme

That silenced a morning wail.

She brought joy to the frightened forest.

The leaves laughed, and I took my legs

And the world in my pocket saying hello

To my seven summers, leaving echoes

Of forest that ripple. A glitter of gold

Still shimmer in my mind.

As I dream of decadence.

Your nimble beauty,

You sailed through the room.

A fishnest stocking face, eyes

That crept.

I looked to my left and simply

caught your eye.

Wanting you to lead me astray

As I dreamt  of decadence.

You wanted me to feel

Your hands , long nails

Along my back.

I listened to the sound

It tickled my skin

Two tails at once,

Slapping hard against my back, my rubber skin.

As I dream of decadence.

I start to tingle, as little rushes

Creep along my back. Up and down

round and round, listen to that sound.

I stretch my back finger tips, reach the sky

Think  my head might pop, think I’m going to fly

As I dream of decadence.

Whistle a tune for Dollymount

Whistle a tune for Dollymont Strand

I use to smell those tarts,

through a gap in the door.

Crouch down low

I could only see the floor and Uncle Fint’s,

black boots as he shuffled.

I could never stay for long, if

nanny was making tea. I was usually chased out.

The smiling threat of a heavy broom, but laughter galore

when I ran, for the door and she said ‘will call you later’ .

I’d run and scamper to skip stones, along Dollymount shore.

Watching them bounce to disappear.

My belly less nauseous moving from hungry grumbles

to sweet skips of joy.  Each new bounce was a record

I kept.

Though as soon as the sun went down I’d

rush back to the door, to hear

The jingle, jangle of Uncle Paddy’s keys .

Singing, his old Dublin songs, falling through

the door, and me behind him trying to catch

Change from his pockets.

That rattled as he rolled to the door.

A whiff of porter lingering on his breath.

Her chops smelt, though her apple sauce was tasty.

She always served Paddy first and

through a gap in the door, I watched

him dance round the floor. My granny

And him arm in arm, my eyes alight.

As I whistled a tune for Dollymount.

Banished

Green eyed monster,  temper, such jealousy

I watched them scrape bark from the trees,

As you weeped and fell to your knees.

In your heart you built a forest that

Thickened . Melancholy, blue arteries wrapped  in thorn.

Time walked as you tried to run through

The forest of blight.

Dark creatures took your dreams

Dragged you out of sight, where

there is no return.

Pushing and pulling, you drifted from

World to world. Falling through holes

Faster than Alice later than the rabbit

There’s no nice tea for you.

Till you’ve run the course.

Half a mile to Trannyshack

Half  a mile to Trannyshack

I was on my way to Trannyshack

Dressed to the nines for such a

Wonderful  ball.  Click Clack, went my

Feet, thumping  and jumping -my pumping heart as

I made my way across the road.

Flick my hair as I pass a homophobe

And wonder if he knows.

That Roxy’s out tonight.

It’s only half a mile to go.

The train stations well in sight.

So I tap my heels together  and wiggle my bum

And wonder ahead .

Good God what’s to come.

My war paint it seemed to hold

God wasn’t I very bold as I stepped onto the train.

Straight into the middle of a premier

Supporters club singing songs.

My impending doom?

But then I dropped my wrist flashing

My luminous nails and listened to the wails

Of  United united .

My big heart skipped a beat but then I found my

Seat, half a mile to Trannyshack.
